MTEL Support Programs

Overview

As part of our overarching strategy to cultivate and retain quality educators for the young people of Boston, the Boston Public Schools Office of Human Resources is committed to supporting educators who need support passing an MTEL, but especially all educators who have been hired on waivers, and those in BPS’ Teacher Pipelines Programs (TPP), including: Bilingual Education/ Accelerated Community to Teacher Program (BE/ACTT), BPS Teaching Fellowship (BPSTF), and Bilingual Inclusive Education Program (BIE). The MTEL team prioritizes these educators because their cultivation and retention are aligned with  BPS’s Inclusive Education Plan and BPS’s overarching strategy to recruit, cultivate, and retain a diverse workforce.

Individualized Support

Beginning in SY25-26, we have developed a multi-tiered, BPS-funded approach to accomplishing our goal of increasing the percentage of retention-eligible educators in BPS. Eligibility for these supports is contingent upon several factors, which are outlined below.

Case Manager Support

District regions are assigned an MTEL Case Manager who works directly with school administration to schedule on site support visits. Case Managers work with each individual educator on the specifics needed to understand, prepare for, and ultimately pass all required MTEL exams with the goal of obtaining licensure.

During 1:1 meetings at school sites (or on Zoom where appropriate), MTEL Case Managers will:

  • Provide MTEL resources: practice tests, test information guides, support with the acquisition of test prep materials (free online materials, organizations that offer additional support, etc.)
  • Provide guidance on how to navigate DESE requirements for licensure, including supporting educators with submitting forms and documentation to DESE’s ELAR portal
  • Support with MTEL registration

Targeted Support

Additional support for educators hired on waivers and BPS TPP educators includes: 240 Tutoring accounts, test vouchers, and entrance into MTEL preparation courses. Eligibility for these resources are explained in the full MTEL Support policy, here.
